Tate St Ives’ town project to be on display next week

Five local home school families have been exploring the art of St Ives artists Barbara Hepworth, Guido Morris and Bernard Leach, as part of the town project, run by the Tate gallery in St Ives. The families took part in hands-on workshops, activity sessions and museum visits and created their own amazing paintings, prints and sculptures.

This is the first time the town project has worked with home educator families and the families were introduced to the project through the team at Barnoon Workshop, St Ives. Artist Oli Raymond Barker met the families at Barnoon Workshop in January 2016, and over February and March became their guide as they visited the St Ives Archives, the Leach Pottery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden.

The families also took part in workshops at Porthmeor Studios including the Japanese 'Gyotaku' fish printing workshop led by artists Vicky Wiltshire and Hayley Buscombe.

The town project, which has been run by the Tate St Ives since 2014, is a three year project for children, schools and families in St Ives. So far, the team has worked with pupils and teachers at six local schools; St Uny Church of England Primary School, St Erth Community Primary School, St Ives Infant School, St Ives Junior School, St Ives Secondary School and Nancledra Primary School.

Tate St Ives received funding from the Heritage Lottery Project to support the town project, which aims to engage the immediate community in St Ives with their local heritage. The heart of this project is about learning and exploring together, for schools, family groups, Tate St Ives and local cultural partners.

The families work is being put on display and to celebrate the launch of their art on Friday from 1.00pm to 2.00pm before it opens to the public. The pop up exhibition of their work will be in the Borlase Smart Room at Porthmeor Studios, between Monday April 18 to Friday April 29.

To visit the free exhibition, please contact Porthmeor Studios on 01736 339339 to check when it is open. The next family Town Project will take place in the summer.
